“I don’t mean Italians abroad, I mean locals. Italy has always had a large following here, it’s only now that it’s waning a bit. They came up to me in tears and asked how it was possible.
“It happened though, so now we need to turn the page. I hope this serves as a catalyst for change, to put everything behind us.
“I would like calcio to be led by men like Damiamo Tommasi and Demetrio Albertini. It takes new faces, but with experience at the same time. We need to put the ball back in the middle of everything.
“They love football and they’re experts in the current issues and problems. I don’t need to say anything else.”
Prandelli was also asked how he sees Serie A from the outside.
“Interesting and uncertain. We’re lucky to have four teams that can fight to the end for the Scudetto. However, to maintain a high level of competitiveness it would be right to reduce the league to 16 teams.
“I don’t see one team as favourite over the others, but I have a soft spot for [Napoli Coach Maurizio] Sarri and the work he’s doing.”
