The CT is anticipated as today set to name a 35-40-man squad of players to undergo physical tests at Coverciano on Monday and Tuesday next week.

These tests, which will not include training or practice matches, are set to determine individual training programmes for each player, in preparation for their possible call-up to the World Cup, so omission is seen for most as confirmation that they will not make the summer tournament.

Luca Toni and Francesco Totti are expected to be the headline names to miss this first cut, whilst Antonio Di Natale is another expected not to be included.

Mattia Destro is widely seen as set to miss out due to Prandelli’s code of ethics, though speculation is that he may be handed a final opportunity closer to the May 13 cut-off when a 30-man provisional squad must be named.

Simone Scuffet is seen as likely to be called up, whilst Torino’s Matteo Darmian and Parma’s Mattia Cassani are seen as in contention for a full-back slot.

Giuseppe Rossi and Antonio Cassano are both expected to be included in the selection, even as rumours indicate they will be vying for one spot on the plane out to Brazil.

We have analysed the chances some of those in contention really have of making the squad, in our World Cup Squad Selector.
