Giampaolo Pozzo-owned Watford have missed out on promotion to the Premier League, after a play-off defeat to Crystal Palace.

The Hornets, who were taken over by the Pozzo family last summer, finished third in the regular season and won through to today’s play-off final thanks to a two-legged semi-final win over Leicester.

However, Gianfranco Zola’s side, who have taken a number of players on loan from the Pozzo family’s primary club Udinese, were beaten 1-0 by Palace after extra time.

However, Gianfranco Zola’s side, who have taken a number of players on loan from the Pozzo family’s primary club Udinese, were beaten 1-0 by Palace after extra time.

The tie at Wembley was decided after Marco Cassetti conceded a penalty, which Kevin Phillips duly converted for the only goal.

The Pozzo family, whose saw the Zebrette finish this year’s Serie A in fifth place, saw their other club Granada this weekend secure their top-flight status in Spain’s Primera Division for another season.
