Andrea Poli hopes Antonio Cassano can join him in the Italy squad and reveals why he left Inter. “I can only thank Cesare Prandelli.”

The midfielder spent last season on loan at San Siro, but they did not take up their option, so he returned to Sampdoria.

“I don’t want to get into the club dynamics that were at work here,” said Poli.

“All the indications were that it was guaranteed Inter would buy me on a permanent basis, but then that didn’t happen. I have overcome that moment of disappointment, even if it wasn’t easy.

“In any case, I am happy at Samp and so I have no problem with the way things panned out. I didn’t expect us to have such a good start to the season. Fortunately, after two years of injuries I have been able to begin without that handicap. I’m still not 100 per cent, mind you.”

Sampdoria’s two consecutive victories over Milan and Siena have put them in good stead and Poli earned a recall to the Italy squad for the World Cup qualifiers against Bulgaria and Malta.

“I can only thank Cesare Prandelli for giving me this chance to play with great champions. I am happy and it’s always exciting to be representing your country.”

Cassano was not in the side, leading some to suggest his Azzurri career is over.

“I don’t know how he will settle in at Inter, but we all know Cassano’s qualities. I hope to play with him again for the Nazionale.”
