Former Manchester United chief executive David Gill says Juventus’ Paul Pogba was offered a great deal to remain at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils have been widely criticised for failing to keep hold of the Frenchman and allowing him to join the Old Lady on a free transfer.

“We did offer him a new deal,” Gill told the Red Café website. “We offered Pogba a very good wage as well as a very generous fee for his agent.

“I don’t want to go into the details because it was a very complex issue.

“All I can say is that we were very disappointed.

“Whenever a player is determined to leave and his contract allows it there is nothing we can do about it.

“I can assure you that we did not hold anything back financially.”
