Fiorentina boss Stefano Pioli says his side ‘only played in flashes’ after defeat at Sampdoria.

The Viola were well beaten at Marassi, with Fabio Quagliarella’s hat-trick rendering Carlos Sanchez’s late consolation meaningless.

“Today we were only a team in flashes,” Pioli admitted after the 3-1 loss. “We were not consistent.

“Sampdoria created problems for us and we didn’t express all of our characteristics.

“Today we were only a team in flashes,” Pioli admitted after the 3-1 loss. “We were not consistent.

“Sampdoria created problems for us and we didn’t express all of our characteristics.

“We had some important chances. Until it went to 1-0 the team played as a team, but then the second goal made the situation more complicated.

“I was expecting more today. We know we can do better, we want to get more points than we did in the first half of the season.

“Against Inter we played a good game, today we did not succeed. We weren’t consistent and we tired. We are not happy.”

Pioli would not rule out bolstering his squad in what remains of the January transfer window, although he is open to allowing Khouma Babacar to leave the club.

“If there is the opportunity, we will improve the squad.

“Babacar? I am not worried about losing him.”
