Stefano Pioli felt Fiorentina “deserved to win” in their 1-1 draw with Udinese and the day was overshadowed by Davide Astori’s memory.

Edimilson Fernandes got the equaliser after the Viola were caught by a classic counter-attack on their own corner kick.

“We didn’t deal with the set play situations well. We knew Udinese would’ve created problems from those moves, but we still weren’t dynamic enough in our reactions,” the Coach told Sky Sport Italia.

“We didn’t deal with the set play situations well. We knew Udinese would’ve created problems from those moves, but we still weren’t dynamic enough in our reactions,” the Coach told Sky Sport Italia.

“It was nonetheless important to get back into the game. I saw my players were not satisfied with the point at the final whistle and that means we have the right mentality.

“In order for Luis Muriel to build up a head of steam with his runs, we needed Udinese not to be quite so deep. Perhaps he was also not at 100 per cent following recent games.

“With Udinese playing in a very defensive way, we needed to move faster and better. If there was a team that deserved to win today, it was Fiorentina.”

The return to Udine is always going to be an emotional moment, as on March 4, 2018, captain Astori went to sleep in the team hotel the night before a Serie A match here and never woke up.

“It was already a strange sensation yesterday, because it was impossible not to relive the experience and the sensations of that awful day.

“I hope that Davide is proud of what we are achieving. We miss him very much, but at the same time, we know that he is with us and that is important.”
