Pezzella was on the receiving end of an elbow from Verona's Samuel Di Carmine, who went on to score the winning goal, just three minutes into the match.

And now the club have confirmed via a statement that the Argentina international has indeed fractured his cheekbone.

"German Pezzella was substituted today with a fracture to his right cheekbone, the same area that he fractured last May. He has already undergone medical checks and will undergo surgery to reduce the fracture in the coming days."

The defeat now sees the Viola lie 10th in the table, with one win in their last five games.

They are at home to Lecce next weekend.
