Genoa and Italy goalkeeper Mattia Perin assured he “will keep on smiling” after being ruled out for three to four months with a torn ACL.

The unlucky shot-stopper has torn the anterior cruciate ligament in both knees over the past nine months.

“I am doing well, the Professor told me the operation went smoothly,” Perin told Mediaset Premium and Sky Sport Italia from his hospital bed.

“This is part of a player’s career, but also of life in general. It’s another four-month walk in the park before I can start working with my teammates again. There are far worse things in life and in a way I’m fortunate that I already know the physiotherapy process now. I will keep on smiling.

“Humans always find the strength to get back on their feet in moments of difficulty. We have a survival imperative that comes to the fore.

“I was pleased to receive so many get well messages from my colleagues. It’s true I am extroverted as a person, but I am also very committed to my work and they probably realised that.”

Professor Francesco Mariani said Perin should be able to recover in just three months rather than the feared five or six.

“He talked about a quick recovery because he knows me by now. I won’t set targets for myself, because the season ends in May and I just want to be at my best when pre-season training starts over the summer.

“If I’ve understood anything from all these injuries, it’s that you need to return only when you are 100 per cent fit.”
