Atalanta President Antonio Percassi wrote an open letter to fans ahead of their Europa League showdown with Borussia Dortmund.
They had been leading 2-1 in the first leg in Germany only to eventually lose 3-2 in stoppages.
“Last Thursday at the Signal Iduna Park in Dortmund we experienced fantastic, unique emotions, in certain ways incredible and indescribable,” wrote Percassi.

“It was a wonderful atmosphere, the kind that gives goosebumps, and further fired up the lads and our Coach. Atalanta left one of the most important German stadiums with heads held high… but it’s not finished, we await the second leg.
“With great trepidation and excitement, the countdown is on to the appointment at the Mapei Stadium: it’ll certainly be another celebration, another night to be lived together to write a wonderful new page in the Nerazzurri history books.
“It’s a story we are living also thanks to the generosity of President Squinzi and Sassuolo Calcio, as well as the Reggio-Emilia authorities: we thank them all on behalf of Atalanta.”
As the Stadio Azzurri d’Italia in Bergamo does not meet UEFA requirements, Atalanta have played all their Europa League home fixtures in Sassuolo’s Mapei Stadium instead.
“The appointment with the second leg against Borussia is imminent… What seemed unthinkable until a short while ago is now reality! As I so often hear you sing: ‘We are Bergamo and we know no limits…’ Never a truer word said.
“The welcome we received in Dortmund is to be repaid: it was fantastic before the game to see Atalanta and Borussia fans together.
“At the Mapei Stadium, as at the Signal Iduna Park: united for another Nerazzurri celebration, to write our story together.”
