Fabio Pecchia appeared to criticise Verona fans after today’s vital 1-0 win over relegation rivals Cagliari.

Romulo’s first half penalty gave the Scaligeri a much-needed three points in their battle against the drop, moving them to within two points of safety.

Fabio Pecchia appeared to criticise Verona fans after today’s vital 1-0 win over relegation rivals Cagliari.

Romulo’s first half penalty gave the Scaligeri a much-needed three points in their battle against the drop, moving them to within two points of safety.

And Pecchia, who reportedly would have been sacked had Verona failed to secure a positive result today, congratulated his players on their success despite the negative 'atmosphere' at the club.

“We are back to winning ways, the table has tightened up,” the former Real Madrid assistant said in his post-match interview.

“It’s an important win and I congratulate my boys. It isn’t easy to play in this atmosphere for eight months.

“The aim of staying up is in our hands. We are a young team and we have lost some parts of it.

“In this final phase of the season, what matters much more is our mental approach as opposed to the technical side.”

Pecchia was asked again about the atmosphere at the Bentegodi, with Verona fans having voiced their frustrations through protests on a number of occasions this season.

“All you have to do is come here and live through the situation a little bit. However, the team has to respond on the pitch.

“Everything that goes on off the pitch is part of the game.”

The Hellas boss commented on the recent resignation of sporting director Filippo Fusco.

“I don’t know the reason why he resigned and I was against it.

“The targets were clear from the start of the season – to stay up, even if it we did it at the last possible moment.

“My relationship with him is strong and he was an advantage for the club.”
