The Scaligeri were comprehensively beaten at home by their relegation rivals, who triumphed by a surprisingly emphatic 3-0 scoreline.

And despite fan protests following the match, Pecchia said he is not considering leaving his post.

“I am a professional. I’ll continue to work, then the club will decide,” he said after defeat left Verona five points adrift of safety.

“Our job is linked to results which right now are not brilliant.

"But I’ll continue to work and I’m definitely not thinking about resigning.

“It’s a difficult defeat to accept. Nobody expected a match like that to occur.

“It’s a horrible defeat against a direct rival. The performance wasn’t at a high level at least for the second half.”

Pecchia added that the fan protests are ‘part of football’ and called for his team to show a reaction to today’s disappointment.

“It’s part of football. I am sorry for the lack of reaction shown by the team.

“We take responsibility, it’s a match which is damaging for our standing in the table.

“We need to have the strength to get back up because the journey is difficult but not impossible.”
