Mauro Icardi could leave Inter and be replaced by Genoa’s Leonardo Pavoletti if they fail to reach the Champions League, say reports.

Gazzetta dello Sport reports that despite President Erick Thohir’s assertions that last season’s Capocannoniere isn’t for sale, failure to qualify for Europe’s top competition could force his hand.

The newspaper writes that the Nerazzurri will be forced to scale down their ambitions if they don’t finish in the top three and will need to sacrifice a big player in order to fund new signings.

Manchester United are reportedly willing to pay €40m for the striker should Inter let him go.

Gazzetta believes that Genoa’s Pavoletti is the favourite to replace Icardi if he leaves, as Inter sporting director Piero Ausilio is a fan and he has the right profile and hunger for the club.

The 27-year-old is currently injured, but has scored an impressive 10 goals in 17 Serie A appearances for the Grifone this season.

The report names Maldonado’s Jonathan Calleri, Leverkusen’s Javier Hernandez, Marseille’s Michy Batshuayi and Borja Gonzalez of Atletico Madrid as potential alternatives.
