Parma will appeal their five-point Serie A deduction, as well as the two-year ban for striker Emanuele Calaiò.

The Ducali risked being denied promotion, but a point deduction was applied to the coming season rather than the last, so as things stand they’ll start 2018-19 in the top flight on -5.

Calaiò was found guilty of attempted match fixing for texts he sent to Spezia players, though the 36-year-old has always maintained he was joking.

“Parma Calcio 1913 notes with great bitterness the sentence issued today by the Tribunale Federale Nazionale,” a statement from the Crociati begins.

“We consider the sanction on our player Emanuele Calaiò, given the facts that led the charges, to be iniquitous, illogical and and in contrast with recent sporting jurisprudence, as is the heavy sanction placed upon our club.

“We trust that the total innocence of Parma Calcio 1913 with regard to any unlawful behaviour is already recognised by the Corte Federale di Appello, to which we will appeal in very short order in the hope of finding justice.”
