“We were close – very close – to signing Mario Balotelli, but in the end were unable to complete the negotiations.

“However, our director of sport Pietro Leonardi is working to bring in the striker we need.”

Parma were sold by former patron Tommaso Ghirardi in December after serious financial difficulties, which saw the club docked a point this season.

The Ducali are currently bottom of the Serie A table with just nine points.

“The financial situation of the club is fairly difficult, but our strategy regards both the economic elements and the sporting ones to reach our goals.

“It is difficult, but not impossible. We want to reinforce the side with a top quality centre-forward.”
