The Argentine has said several times he’d be very happy to represent the Azzurri and is admired by current Coach Giampiero Ventura.

A couple of months ago Gomez received his Italian passport and it was believed he could be in the squad for upcoming games against Liechtenstein and Germany.

However, a more detailed investigation had discovered Gomez will never be able to play for Italy.

This is because the FIFA rules state a player can only change nationality if he already had a dual passport at the time of his first call-up.

Gomez played for Argentina at Under-20 level and only recently received Italian citizenship.
