It’s widely reported that De Zerbi has been picked for the position, which would be his first in Serie A.

He is likely to be handed a two-year contract worth just €500,000 per season.

The 37-year-old tactician only had one genuine coaching job, at Foggia from July 2014 to August 14 of this year, when he parted company with the club over a difference of strategy.

De Zerbi won the Coppa Italia Lega Pro in April and lost the promotion play-off Final to Pisa.

The Sicilians had a chaotic campaign in 2015-16 with eight changes of management, including Ballardini’s dismissal and return a few weeks later.

There was tension around the lack of transfer activity this summer, prompting President Maurizio Zamparini to publicly urge the Coach to “shut up and stop asking for players.”

The situation deteriorated after the club failed to sign a much-needed striker on transfer deadline day and Zamparini confirmed Ballardini had resigned yesterday.
