There were several contentious incidents during the second leg of the play-off final at the Stadio Stirpe, including the referee awarding a free kick on the edge of the box, changing his mind to a penalty and then reverting back to his original decision.

In stoppages, play was repeatedly halted by ball boys and even Frosinone players throwing extra footballs on to the pitch during Palermo attacks.

An initial appeal to have the result frozen was rejected, but Palermo released a statement today via President Giovanni Giammarva.

“We remain convinced this match did not take place in a regular environment. This opinion was reinforced after reading the referee’s report, which confirms that all the individual incidents that occurred during the game were part of a single project aimed at putting obstacles in the way of the regular procedure and damaging Palermo.

“The Disciplinary Commission decided to evaluate the individual occurrences (throwing balls, even from the stands, the pitch invasion before the final whistle) and not consider that together they effectively altered the game and consequently should’ve seen Frosinone sanctioned with a defeat.

“All of this has also been presented to the Federal Court of Appeal.”
