The 46-year-old spent four seasons in Sicily as a player, and has now been tasked with guiding the Rosanero to safety.

“Firstly, I want to spare a moment for Roberto De Zerbi and his staff,” Corini began his presentation by saying, with his predecessor sacked after Coppa Italia defeat yesterday.

“It’s a delicate time, the situation in the table is hard and heavy, and in these cases there are a lot of difficulties.

“If I’ve decided to come back then it’s because I feel strength and energy in my players and our fans, because if we get through this period it’ll be thanks to them.

“We must have the strength to remain in Serie A, and my staff and I will do our best to achieve this goal. It seems difficult and complicated now, but I’m sure we can do it.

“It will take strength to change this inertia, and I’m sure they have that strength. The team has the qualities to reach the important goal of survival.

“When it comes to this team and this city, it means something more to me. When the President [Maurizio Zamparini] invited me to the meeting, I accepted without knowing what would come of it, but I was pleased.

“Now my job is to look for a way to turn this around. I have a contract until the end of the season, and a renewal will only be possible if we survive, I wouldn’t have it any other way.

“I know the team, and I’m sure we’ll succeed.”
