Rodrigo Palacio has admitted that he is doing everything in his power to claim a place in Argentina’s World Cup squad.

The Inter striker has made 15 appearances for the national team since his debut in 2005, but with the likes of Lionel Messi, Sergio Aguero, Gonzalo Higuain and Angel Di Maria also fighting for a place in the squad, the 32-year-old will face tough competition on the plane to Brazil.

“To play in a second World Cup with Argentina would be something spectacular,” he told Tyc Sports.

“I don’t know if I’ll be part of the squad that goes to Brazil – it’ll be difficult because we have so many great players.

“Hopefully [Coach Alejandro] Sabella will think I have done enough.”

Palacio then commented on countryman Javier Zanetti, who will retire at the end of the season.

“Javier’s a good person who always has time to listen to you. He’s a calming influence to everyone.”
