Pablo Daniel Osvaldo has apologised to fans after missing a penalty in Roma’s loss to Sampdoria on Sunday.

The Argentine-born Italian international decided to put the ball on the spot despite the presence of regular penalty taker Francesco Totti on the pitch.

Osvaldo has since been heavily criticised for missing the spot-kick and also going over the head of the club captain.

“I’m very disappointed,” he said on his Twitter account. “I would like to say sorry to the fans and I certainly didn’t want to show any disrespect to Francesco.

“I simply felt the need to take it. Sometimes a goal helps you to get back your self-confidence and that is what is missing right now.

“Nobody more than me can know what I’m going through.

“However, I, along with my teammates, will find the strength to look forward and get us out of this situation.

“We’re a strong side and we’ll get back to winning ways. I’ll once more say sorry. I’m very tied to this shirt.

“Forza Roma, always.”

The Giallorossi, who sacked boss Zdenek Zeman last week, have collected just two points from the last 18 available.

They entertain League leaders Juventus on Saturday night.
