Republic of Ireland manager Martin O’Neill admits Jon Walters is “very doubtful” for the Italy game tomorrow.

The Stoke City striker has missed training for the past two days, and it appears almost certain he won’t be fit to start against the Azzurri.

“Walters didn’t train today, so he’s very doubtful for the game with Italy,” O’Neill admitted in his pre-match Press conference.

“There’s a quiet confidence in the team. We have to eliminate the mistakes we made against Belgium, the players are aware of that.

“We need to get back to playing the way we did against Sweden. Italy have quality, so we have to be ready and I think we will be.

“Our supporters have been fantastic so far, they’ve spent their hard-earned money to be here in France. We want to reward them with a win against Italy tomorrow night.

“In October we beat World Champions Germany in qualification, in a game where we had to win. Our motivation will be the same as that and the play-off against Bosnia.”
