Novara have confirmed that they have sacked Coach Attilio Tesser and replaced him Emiliano Mondonico.

Struggling at the foot of the table, seven points adrift of safety and without a win in eight Serie A games, the Piedmont club took the decision on Monday afternoon to axe Tesser.

Patron Massimo De Salvo had previously backed Tesser, the Coach who had taken the club into Serie A for the first time in 55 years, and was denying as late as Sunday night that the 53-year-old would be removed.

However, the action has now been confirmed, with former Torino, Napoli and Fiorentina tactician Mondonico brought in as his immediate replacement.

“I do not want to have any regrets, I want us to try until the end” De Salvo said in a statement released this evening.

“The team needed a shake and so, even with the great and deep sadness in my heart, I had to make this decision.

“[Mondonico was chosen] because he gave his OK to this squad, with which he believes he can do a good job with. And if he has special requirements, we will try to please him, even if there is only one day of the transfer market left.”

Mondonico’s appointment comes exactly a year and a day on from when he was initially forced to step down from his previous position at AlbinoLeffe. That was due to being diagnosed with cancer, treatment for which forced his resignation in June.

The 64-year-old, who confirmed he had beaten the disease in mid-November, gave an initial reaction to returning to Serie A, where he has spent almost half of his coaching career.

“The first thought is that it has come full circle – at the end of last January I had the operation and after a year it so happens that I am back to the life I have always lived.

“I’m sorry for Tesser, during my difficult moments it has always interested me how close football and life are made of these things.

“I hope that Novara can do well. They have their merits to do so.”
