Sky Sport Italia claim the option for €3.8m will become mandatory at his 10th competitive appearance for Inter.

His girlfriend wrote on Twitter that it was “not just a loan, it’s a loan with obligation to buy,” but later deleted the comment.

This is a comeback for Santon, who grew up in the Inter youth academy and was sold to Newcastle in 2011.

“Life is strange, I never imagined I’d come back,” Santon wrote on his official Facebook page.

“I thank Newcastle and all the fans for these three and a half years together, we had many good times and this city and this team will forever be in my heart.

“I am starting a new chapter, I’m happy to return to Inter. I started my career there and had so many important moments.

“I’ll do my best to repay the faith shown in me.”
