Gianluca Vialli’s proposed purchase of Sampdoria is off after his consortium could not agree a price with President Massimo Ferrero.

Vialli had been heading the Calcioinvest consortium, which included Jamie Dinan and Alex Knaster as backers.

Talks went on for months, in turn affecting the early part of Eusebio Di Francesco’s reign as Coach, given they did not sign any senior players between July 13 and August 12.

A deal has long hinged on valuation, but it finally conceded defeat in a statement released on Monday.

“At the end of a long and careful due diligence process, carried out with enthusiasm and professionalism, Calcioinvest considered the current financial demands to be excessive.”

Ferrero wanted 100m for the club – a price the Blucerchiati hero and his investors were seemingly not willing to pay.
