Niang turned 22 last month and has been at Milan since leaving Caen in August 2012 for €3m.

He had loan spells at Montpellier and Genoa, but this is the first time he has gone with an option to buy.

This season he scored three goals with three assists in 18 Serie A games.

Niang leaves Milan with 12 goals and 10 assists in 77 competitive appearances.

“Watford FC is pleased to confirm the capture of exciting young AC Milan forward M'Baye Niang,” read a statement this evening.

“The highly-rated 22-year-old has signed on loan until the end of the 2016-17 season, and the Hornets also have the option of making the move permanent in the summer.

“Niang can play on the wings or in a central attacking position, and the former France Under-21 international becomes Watford’s third signing of the January transfer window.

“Having made his professional debut with French outfit Caen aged just 16, Niang’s dynamic performances drew attention from some of Europe’s biggest clubs and in 2012 he secured a move to Italy with AC Milan.

“The pacy attacker became the second youngest scorer in AC Milan history when netting in a Coppa Italia tie against Reggina aged 17 years and 350 days in December 2012.

“Niang gained further experience through loans at Montpellier and Genoa before returning to the San Siro with AC Milan, where he has played 77 times in total, scoring 12 goals.

“He will wear squad number 21 for Watford.”
