Cagliari have officially fired Coach Diego Lopez, but so far have not appointed a replacement.

The decision was in the air after a 3-1 home defeat to Roma left them seven points clear of the relegation zone.

“The necessity to shake up the team in this final stage of the season to achieve the objective of safety made a change of management indispensible,” read the statement.

“This decision is very painful, as Lopez has proved himself as a professional and a man, and in the past as a symbol and captain of the squad.

“The club thanks the Coach for his work and wishes him all the best for his future endeavours.”

A replacement has not yet been named, but it’s reported to be former assistant manager Ivo Pulga.

It would be a surprise return, as he was sacked on February 18 after he seemed on the verge of replacing Lopez.

This is the second dismissal of the day, as Catania also sacked Rolando Maran.
