Andrea Pirlo has reiterated that he hasn’t moved to New York City FC ‘for a holiday’ and is confident of adapting to many changes.

The Italy international also expressed his belief that a move to the MLS won’t affect his chances of an Azzurri call-up in an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport.

“My ambition in the USA is to be a part of an important project. It’s a great challenge for me and I like challenges ,” said the 36-year-old.

“We’re starting from nothing – six months ago this team didn’t exist, a bit like when I arrived at Juventus.

“In a certain sense we were starting from scratch then as well. I had four fantastic seasons and found a winning group that brought some formidable results.

“Receiving compliments from my colleagues is always a special thing for me. But I haven’t come here to listen to people say how great I am, neither have I come for a holiday. I want to win.

“Cold weather, long away trips, synthetic pitches and a new language? These are situations one must adapt oneself to. But you understand this at every match you play.

“I’m used to playing 60 games a season, three a week. We also have cold weather, the only small problem is that I’ve had a month of holiday and will need a little time to return to the top of my game.

“The national team won’t be a problem. The Coach watches all the players who play abroad.

“The MLS is a quality and important league like the other European leagues, and it’s up to us to merit a call-up.

“Anyone who knows how to play football can do it anywhere. Giovinco is demonstrating that as he’s doing very well. The ball is the same everywhere.”
