Torino President Urbano Cairo has called on Nicolas Nkoulou to clear the air with the club directly, ‘not through interviews with L’Equipe.’

Nkoulou gave an interview to the French newspaper on Friday, where he confirmed his willingness to play again for Torino but suggested they had gone back on their word of selling him.

“He arrived two years ago, I agreed to take him on loan with an option to buy,” Cairo said at Simone Verdi’s official unveiling.

“When the season ended, his agent told me he could go to Sevilla: I replied that I wanted to keep him with us.

“I didn’t know about any promises he made with the sporting director. I was the only who took up the option to buy him.

“I admitted I’d listen to offers for him the following summer, but they had to be opportunities that we considered appropriate.

“I’m also not going to strengthen our rivals. The issue will be resolved via the appropriate channels, not through interviews with L’Equipe.

“Hearing that his head wasn’t there for a crucial game [Europa League playoff second leg against Wolves] hurt us a lot.

“We’ve explained what needs to be done. It’s something we already know.”
