Salernitana coach Davide Nicola was facing the sack until the last-gasp Boulaye Dia winner, so now it’s Verona boss Gabriele Cioffi who is at risk.

There were reports before kick-off at the Stadio Arechi that Nicola could be axed if Salernitana fell to another defeat.

He was the hero of last season, coming in to rescue a side that was rock bottom and taking them to Serie A safety on the final day.

Nonetheless, he was under pressure after just one win this term, losing the last two on the bounce, including a 5-0 defeat to Sassuolo.

Dia came off the bench today to grab a 94th-minute winner, saving Nicola’s job and plunging opponent Cioffi into the same situation.

Verona had started fairly well, but have now lost four in a row and have just one victory, 2-1 over rock bottom Sampdoria.

According to Sky Sport Italia, Verona are giving some serious thought to what they do next, evaluating the options who could replace Cioffi.

He was only hired over the summer after being the caretaker manager at Udinese.
