Davide Nicola hopes the Torino fightback from 3-0 down to hold Atalanta 3-3 can be ‘a step forward in terms of self-belief. The game is never over until the final whistle.’

They had seemed doomed when trailing 3-0 by the 21st minute, but Andrea Belotti on the rebound from his saved penalty, a Bremer tap-in and Federico Bonazzoli header on Simone Verdi’s free kick turned the game on its head.

This is the third time in Nicola’s three matches that Toro have completed a comeback to snatch a point.

“Quite simply, the next step is for us to try taking the lead and see what we can do from there!” Nicola told Sky Sport Italia.

“The positive here is the result, that we achieved three consecutive draws in very tough fixtures. We were up against an Atalanta side with a precise identity and style, so the fact we came back from 3-0 down has to be a step forward in terms of our self-belief.

“It seemed to be over at 3-0 down, but the game is never over until the final whistle. That is what we needed to realise and we’re getting it now.”

The Granata do continue to leak goals at an alarming rate and conceded three in a six-minute spell today.

“People always look at the final pass or situation that was misread, but when we concede a goal, it’s down to five or six different situations that were misread. They add up and it’s never just about an individual, but the whole team.

“I do ask this team to defend in a different way to what they were accustomed to. I believe they have the capability to be aggressive and defend while going forward to attack their opponents.

“I believe this team has what it takes to fight it out with everyone.”
