Livorno have had a sensational start to the season and Davide Nicola enjoys coaching more than he did playing.

“I was reunited with President Aldo Spinelli 12 years after he owned my Genoa side,” the former defender told Radio Deejay.

“This new role as Coach is so much fun, certainly more than when I was a player. I love watching the group grow and seeing how to put your ideas in practice through other people.

“It’s one thing to have an idea and perform it yourself, but quite another to see it made reality via your players. It’s more satisfying that way.”

Newly-promoted Livorno are surprisingly in seventh place and unbeaten since the opening weekend, notching up two wins and two draws.

They travel to Hellas Verona this afternoon, another newcomer with a strong start to the campaign. Click here for a match preview.

“One of our qualities is that we are realists. We know the weapons at our disposal and what we could do on the transfer market,” continued Nicola.

“That doesn’t take away from the fact we want to give our all to achieve safety, an objective that is certainly more difficult than gaining promotion from Serie B last season.”
