Coach Davide Nicola has claimed the 2-1 win against Lecce gave Genoa ‘an advantage’ in the relegation battle but warned ‘it’s not over yet’.

Lecce goalkeeper Gabriel’s own goal handed the hosts a vital win against their direct rivals in Serie A and Nicola pointed out some issues but was ‘satisfied’ with the overall performance.

“We always struggle, like our opponents do,” Nicola told Sky Sport Italia. “I remember matches when we deserved more, like against Napoli, Udinese and Brescia.

“Today, we managed to adopt our strategies, looking between the lines. Lecce usually don’t cross but tonight they made 24. We were compact.

“The only thing I didn’t like was our centre of gravity, which was pushed down after the goal. We have some problems, but that’s how it is. I’m satisfied with the lads.”

Lecce coach Fabio Liverani was lost for words after the Rossoblu got away with the three points but Nicola claimed his own goalkeeper Mattia Perin didn’t make a save against the Giallorossi.

“I am and we are aware that Genoa must fight to survive, I have been saying the same since December,” Nicola conceded. “We have qualities, but we must be able to read the moments of the match better.

“Something we aren’t that great, but Lecce’s goal came from a lucky cross. Perin didn’t make any saves, in fact.”

Local rivals Sampdoria have pulled away from the relegation battle and the Derby della Lanterna is next up for Nicola’s men.

“It gives us an advantage, but it’s not over yet. Lecce will face Brescia and Udinese, we have the derby and then Inter.

“I’m aware that we must score points and play with the desire to save ourselves.”
