Napoli chief Aurelio De Laurentiis wants boss Walter Mazzarri and Edinson Cavani to stay – but he admits they could both move on at the end of the season.

Cavani has a €63m rescission clause in his Azzurri agreement, while Mazzarri says he’ll decide his future at the end of the campaign.

“I have set the bar high in his contract, primarily because of the desire to keep him in Azzurro,” Mazzarri said when asked about the Uruguayan hotshot.

“But it is clear that if a 25-year-old attacker is wanted by one of the most important clubs in the world then it is understandable that he could be attracted.

“Cavani knows that he is loved and highly respected in Naples, living in our city is an act of faith and conscience.

“Then if there is a crazy €70m offer then we’ll listen to it, but, let us be clear, the last word will go to the player.”

Turning to coaching matters, the movie mogul dismissed speculation that he’s already made contact with Bologna’s Stefano Pioli should Mazzarri quit the San Paolo.

“I’ve never thought of Pioli,” ADL noted. “He is a Coach who I admire as his teams have always caused us difficulties. But I haven’t looked for a new Coach as I’m waiting for Mazzarri.

“There is a loyal relationship and friendship with Mazzarri. My intention is to continuously improve the team year after year with the right signings.

“There is action to be taken and a lot of work necessary to end this season well and be best prepared for the next one.

“My plan is to lay important foundations for the future and give a competitive squad to Mazzarri or any other potential tactician.

“Walter’s future will be decided in a moment of tranquillity and we’ll discuss everything with him in a calm fashion.”
