According to the Corriere dello Sport, a recent trip to England by director of sport Riccardo Bigon was targeted at Vlaar.
The 29-year-old Dutch centre-back will be out of contract at the end of the season and Villa are therefore prepared to release him six months early for a cut-price fee.

It’s claimed Benitez specifically requested Vlaar to reinforce his back four, which has stuttered so far this term.
Vlaar had also been linked with a Serie A move to Juventus, Lazio and Roma in recent months.
Meanwhile, it’s practically certain Napoli will sign Manolo Gabbiadini from Sampdoria over the January transfer window.
Benitez even joked about the deal by laughingly insisting he “did not hear the question” when asked about the striker.
That move is reportedly worth €11m plus €2m in add-ons.
