Los Blancos have been linked with late moves for Christian Eriksen and Donny van de Beek, but AS is now reporting Zinedine Zidane would prefer to keep the Colombian over bringing in an alternative to Pogba.

James finds himself in the same boat as Gareth Bale, who has since been reintegrated into Madrid’s first team by Zidane.

The 28-year-old is also highly rated by Merengues chiefs, who splashed out €76m to sign him in the summer of 2014 after an acclaimed World Cup campaign in Brazil.

It had been claimed that Madrid would agree to a Napoli loan if a sale did not take place before August 15, but there is no longer any suggestion Zidane’s side will do that.
