The reports continue in both Italy and Spain, even though Mascherano has a €100m buy-out clause in his Barcelona contract.
It is suggested Napoli hope to tempt him into a transfer for €20m so he can reunite with his former Liverpool manager.
Benitez would also pledge to use the 29-year-old as a defensive midfielder, whereas for the past three seasons he has mainly played at centre-back for the Blaugrana.
