Under the headline “I thought I was going to die”, today’s Corriere del Mezzogiorno tells the story of a 24-year-old away fan called Mattia.

The Napoli fan had graduated on November 24, and was given a four day trip to the UK as a reward by his parents.

The man from Vomero alleges he was surrounded and beaten by up to seven people at the Anfield Road exit after Tuesday night’s game.

Mattia speaks English and tried to ask for help, but it appears no passing motorists wanted to get involved.

Eventually a friend joined Mattia, and together they managed to flag down a car which took the pair to hospital.

The 24-year-old was diagnosed with a fractured cheekbone and a problem with his eye socket which may require surgery.

According to the newspaper, this wasn’t a fight between fans but rather a random attack on a lone Napoli fan.

"It’s absurd to risk death for a football game,” Mattia’s father told the paper.
