Napoli chief Aurelio De Lauerentiis has underlined that the fact Edinson Cavani has a rescission clause in his contract doesn’t mean a transfer is inevitable.

The striker is being paired with Real Madrid and Barcelona in Spain, while he has admirers in England too.

The Uruguayan international signed a new contract in the summer, but that deal included a €63m release fee.

“The last thing on my mind is depriving myself of Cavani,” the Stadio San Paolo chief commented on Thursday.

“I like him as a player and as a man. He’s always there for us, always present, you can count on him 100 per cent.

“I can't do anything about the rescission clause from a legal perspective. But I can do everything possible to convince the player to stay. After all, he would have to accept any transfer.

“And, anyway, who will give me that amount? In the summer I refused €55m, Real Madrid can't get to €50m.

“And to pay the €63m in the clause it would actually take around €70m…”
