Adrian Mutu’s agent claims “Juventus are to blame” after FIFA ordered them to pay €21m damages to Chelsea.

The verdict came from FIFA this morning, as Mutu signed for Juve on a free transfer – loaning him briefly to Livorno – in January 2005 after Chelsea fired him for a positive cocaine test in October 2004.

“Mutu has paid for what he did, paying a fine and spending seven months on the sidelines,” agent Ioan Becali told Dolce Sport in Romania.

“Juventus are to blame. I spoke to Mutu last week and also last night, as we keep in touch. It is not Adrian’s fault and he cannot pay any figure to end this conflict.

“He fundamentally earned his wages and nothing more. Juventus should’ve waited for the seven-month ban to expire, as discussions were only allowed to begin after that period.

“In the contract he signed with Chelsea, there were no clauses. They say that if the player signs for another club, he is obliged to pay compensation and if a player can’t or won’t do that, then others can help him.”

Juventus are expected to lodge a fresh appeal to the TAS tribunal in Lausanne.
