News agency Ansa reports that Jose Mourinho and Roma have worked out a plea bargain to avoid a ban for his accusations against referee Daniele Chiffi.

The pair clashed on the touchline during the 1-1 Serie A draw against Monza on May 3 and Mourinho took the matter beyond the game to the post-match interviews.

“This was the worst referee I have encountered in my entire career,” said Mourinho at the time.

“Believe me, I have dealt with many bad referees. Usually, when I talk about referees, it is because they have a direct influence on the game.

“In this case, I don’t think that is true. But he is horrible, he makes no human connection with anyone, he has no empathy, he gives a red card to a player who slips because he is exhausted at the 96th minute.”

The Special One was on track for yet another touchline ban, which would’ve been imposed for the first game of the 2023-24 season.

However, there are reports this evening that Mourinho’s lawyers and Roma worked out a plea bargain with the FIGC prosecutor and it will be considered tomorrow.

If accepted, Mourinho will only pay a fine and avoid a suspension.

In further comments, the coach had also said he stopped talking to his players for the final 20-30 minutes of the match, because he assumed anything that was said would be misconstrued and used as an excuse to send him off from the touchline.
