Former Inter President Massimo Moratti has questioned the club’s decision to strip Mauro Icardi of their captaincy. “It seems like a useless thing to do.”

Inter’s decision came after Icardi’s agent-wife Wanda Nara went public with a series of statements about the striker’s future, but Moratti defended the Argentine, describing him as ‘a great captain’.

“Do I long for Bergomi and Zanetti? I also found a great captain in Icardi,” he told Sport Mediaset.

“Do I long for Bergomi and Zanetti? I also found a great captain in Icardi,” he told Sport Mediaset.

“He’s always played with enthusiasm, sincerity and professionalism, so I have nothing to say.

“It’s my fault, it’s his fault, it's your fault… everything’s been made public, everything’s been put out in the open and that a isn’t good thing.

“It seems like a useless thing to do midway through the season. I don’t know what advantages it can bring, given they can’t sell him and have objectives to achieve.

“It’s a situation that takes the player away from the club and the club away from the player.

“What would I do? I don’t know the conditions so I don’t understand the reasons why the decision was made.

“There will be reasons and internal strategies, but I can’t get into them.”
