Massimo Moratti thinks Andrea Ranocchia should’ve been at the World Cup and felt bad for Roy Hodgson.

The Honorary Inter President was disappointed that Ranocchia was cut from the final list of 23 players in Brazil.

“I want to defend Ranocchia,” Moratti told Sky Sport Italia after a 2-1 win over England.

“I think he’s more experienced than Gabriel Paletta, who I’m sure will put in a much better performance going forward than he did last night.

“There isn’t a lot of Inter in the Italy squad, but we’ve got quite a few lads at the World Cup playing for other nations.

“Italy-England was a game full of sentiment for me, as there was the pride of our Nazionale, but also a great deal of affection for Hodgson.”

England manager Hodgson was Inter Coach twice, in 1995-96 and very briefly in 1999.

Moratti also revealed there was truth in the rumours he had approached Italy boss Cesare Prandelli to take over.

“At a certain moment that did pass through our list of ideas, but he had other intentions. I met him when he was already Coach of Italy, not before that.”
