Inter President Massimo Moratti said he will continue to defend Antonio Cassano, but “I don’t want him to do any more stupid things.”
The striker was dropped last week after a blazing locker room row with Coach Andrea Stramaccioni, but returned in a 3-0 Europa League defeat to Tottenham on Thursday.
“If I don’t defend Cassano, then who will?” explained President Moratti. “The newspapers tried to think up all sorts of horrible accusations, maybe because they need to sell issues.
“From the first day we signed Cassano, we knew that this sort of thing could happen, but that I would defend him.
“Obviously, in my determination to defend him I also don’t want him to do any more stupid things. In these cases you have to work together, that’s how I see it.
“Besides, we’ve only got two strikers in the squad, so we can’t just cut one out!” he joked.
There were reports this weekend that Moratti is unhappy with the transfer strategy and the way the club is run, so has been in regular contact with PSG director Leonardo over a potential return to Inter.
“I think the issue of the negative moment we are going through is not just about the players. The club must also be more awake, more ready, closer to the squad and more Interista.
“If some of our players are performing less well than others, it’s not the fault of all the other players. In that case, it’s more our fault at the club.”
