Former Inter President Massimo Moratti has backed his successor Erick Thohir to do well at San Siro.

The comments come in the wake of others which appear to criticise the Indonesian for saying that Inter ‘need to be restored.’

However, the 69-year-old, now entitled honorary President, has sought to nip the issue in the bud by discussing the businessman in a more positive light.

He also said that he does not ever see himself returning as Nerazzurri chief, expressed his belief that Andrea Ranocchia would be a good choice to replace Javier Zanetti as club captain and talked up Italy’s chances in the forthcoming World Cup.

“Thohir and his collaborators have the qualities to do well,” Moratti is quoted as saying by La Repubblica.

“It’s better that I don’t come back as President because if that did happen, it would be a sign that things were a mess.

“The fans are always very nice to me, they thank me for the feelings that they have been able to experience in the past and for all the satisfaction they have had.

“I imagine though that they are focused on the future and it’s right that that’s the case.

“Yes, I would really like it if Ranocchia can be captain. I also hope that he goes to the World Cup.

“I will definitely follow the Azzurri at the World Cup with passion, as I have always done.

“Prandelli has good sense, it’s good that he has managed to put together a good group who will maybe be underestimated at the beginning.

“But, as usual, they will show their character in the end. Character is necessary because enables you to do good things.”
