Vincenzo Montella says “it was difficult to buy a better striker” than Nikola Kalinic, as Milan had already spent their summer transfer budget.

The Croatian joined the Rossoneri in the summer of 2017, with many believing it was Montella who asked for him.

The Coach was sacked midway through the season, and Kalinic moved to Atletico Madrid last summer after just six goals in 41 games.

“Let’s say that we talked about some [signings],” Montella told Corriere della Sera.

“Others I came to at the end of the deal. With [Leo] Bonucci, for example, I pushed on his salary.

“We got to the end of the transfer window with few resources to get a regista and a striker.

“It’s true that we were close to [Alvaro] Morata and [Pierre-Emerick] Aubameyang, but with a €20m budget it was difficult to buy a better striker than Kalinic.”

Christian Abbiati said Montella didn’t trust anyone during his time with the Diavolo.

“Considering his interview, maybe I was right…

“The truth is that I invited every member of staff to technical meetings, but he never showed up.”
