Vincenzo Montella felt Rodrigo De Paul “added insult to injury” when he scored just after avoiding a red card as Udinese beat Milan 2-1.

The striker scythed down Mattia De Sciglio, who went off injured, and was only given a yellow card.

Moments later, and with De Sciglio still awaiting a substitution, De Paul scored the winning goal.

“If we just look at the result, then it seems bad, but we have to delve deeper,” Montella told Mediaset Premium.

“When we were 1-0 up, we had the chances to close the game off. The lads had a good approach and we conceded a goal in a really banal manner.

“In the second half we were so naïve, conceding a goal when down to 10 men. There are many incidents in this defeat, we do have to improve, but at times the lads did have a good game.

“The De Paul situation added insult to injury… As well as it being a red card, we ended up down to 10 men with an injured player and didn’t have time to make the substitution. What can you say about that foul? It seemed a clear red.

“At the same time, we were naïve, because we gave the ball away and left ourselves open in that situation. We did something similar in Turin and you pay for that at this level. We hope it’ll help these young players to grow and learn.”

Giacomo Bonaventura had also gone off with a muscular problem after scoring the opening goal.

“We’ll see what the tests say over the next few days.”
