Vincenzo Montella confessed the performance in the 1-0 defeat to Sassuolo was “not worthy of Fiorentina. I didn’t expect this.”

Domenico Berardi scored the only goal and Andrea Consigli saved Jordan Veretout’s penalty, but the Neroverdi dominated the game and had another goal disallowed for a millimetrical offside ruling.

“This was a defeat we could’ve done without. The last few games we played with spirit and determination, but I saw none of that today,” confessed the Coach on Sky Sport Italia.

“I have to analyse it, try to get through the next few weeks and talk to the club about what to do going forward.”

This defeat came after Thursday’s Coppa Italia semi-final exit to Atalanta, which effectively left them with no objectives for this season.

“I didn’t expect this and I don’t know why it happened. I don’t know if it was because we felt deflated after the Coppa Italia, if there was fatigue, if it was psychological or physical. What I do know is that this was not a performance worthy of Fiorentina.

“We tried to change a few things, but this team plays in fits and starts, whereas I prefer a style of football that is more built up over time and seeking out the spaces. I have to make my evaluations.

“We were slow and that is also something that absolutely needs to be changed. The team had played with spirit, heart and quality in the first three games I had in charge. We gave the worst of ourselves tonight and need to figure out what happened.

“If it was fear or feeling deflated after the Coppa, that can’t happen, as Fiorentina ought to be playing every three days and must recharge the batteries every time.”

Federico Chiesa won a penalty, although it seemed to be a mutual shirt-tug with Federico Peluso, prompting more accusations that he is a ‘diver.’

“It’s not fair, as he is a young lad, he is sensitive and hearing certain things shouted at him can be damaging. He tried to stay on his feet and that’s why it took a while for the penalty to be given. We’ve had a few penalties given against us recently that the striker has gone looking for.”
