“We are at the start of a new journey and I too am curious to see how we do tomorrow,” said the coach in his press conference.
“I know that we’re unbeaten in six and picked up 12 points using the same 3-5-2 system as Lazio. I want to see progress against a very strong team that for the last 10 years has always got past the group stage in Europe, a squad worthy of being in the Champions League.
“We’ll need to be at our best in terms of determination, technique and tactics. Lazio will be fired up after the Europa League defeat to Celtic, so this is a good test for us.
“I see Fiorentina have more appeal now than in the past and I think a lot of that is due to (President Rocco) Commisso and his way of working, as well as the bond between the club and the city. Franck Ribery also gave us credit with neutrals, but ultimately it all depends on whether we get the ball in the net.”
Federico Chiesa has been on the end of criticism lately for going down to easily and was booked for simulation last week.
“Chiesa needs to relax. He has the potential to do better, and he will, but needs to develop without pressure. Besides, drawing a foul is a skill for a striker.”
Fiorentina’s run of victories came to a halt with their 0-0 draw against Brescia on Monday night.
“I heard people say it was a bad game, but we had 10 shots on goal against one from the opposition. The way I see it, that is playing well.
“These are tough fixtures, the kind that can decide a title or relegation. I liked the attitude shown on Monday, especially in the final half-hour, and the ball flying 10cm one way or the other of the upright won’t change my evaluation of the performance.
“We’re at the embryonic stage compared to other teams who have been working together for five years, it’s natural we’re not up to speed yet.
“I’d gladly take another 10 shots on goal against Lazio.”
