Roma’s Monchi explains Patrik Schick was signed with the future in mind and confirms Leandro Paredes was sold because he “wanted to leave”.

Schick was Roma’s record signing over the summer, despite Edin Dzeko being their undisputed starting striker and the Czech not being a natural winger, whereas Paredes left for Zenit St Petersburg after the return of fellow midfielder Lorenzo Pellegrini.

“The sporting director must be close to not only the Coach but also the club,” the sporting director continued at a book launch.

“The sporting director must be close to not only the Coach but also the club,” the sporting director continued at a book launch.

“He must look at not only the present but also the future. If tomorrow, the opportunity to sign Dani Alves presents itself, like it did when I was at Sevilla, what do you do?

“Do you not sign him because you already have three players in that role? This must be sorted by the sporting director.

“He must understand not only what the Coach wants but also the club. I’m convinced that no Coach says ‘no’ to a good player and one with talent.

“Paredes? There were two reasons. The player told me he didn’t play as there was a lot of competition and so wanted to leave. This is difficult to manage.”
